The time has finally come: Apple is launching its new iPhones on the market.
On October 13, Apple announced its new smartphones. This year there are four different models: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple gave the four devices a new design, which secretly resembles that of the iconic iPhone 4. The devices have angular edges and a smaller notch to create more space for the screen. In terms of material, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are made of the very best: a frame of stainless steel and a front and back of glass. They are also dust and waterproof.
iPhone 12 Mini
Apple calls the iPhone 12 mini "the smallest, thinnest, lightest 5G phone in the world," and given the size of most 5G phones, that sounds pretty plausible. The dimensions are 64.2 x 131.5 x 7.4 mm and it weighs 133 g.
The iPhone 12 mini comes in the same colors as the iPhone 12: black, white, red, navy, and light green. It also has the same MagSafe magnetic ring on the back so you can clip on covers, wallets, and wireless charging pads.
The new iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen size with a notch at the top of the screen. It appears to have the same notch we've seen on recent iPhone products.
The back of the phone is glass, but Apple was keen to make it clear that this phone is more robust than previous iPhones. It uses a new technology on the front called Ceramic Shield, which makes your screen a lot more durable.
We haven't heard the exact dimensions of the iPhone 12 yet, but the company says it's 11% thinner, 15% smaller, and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11.
The iPhone 12 is available in five colors: black, white, red, green, and blue.
iPhone 12 Pro & iPhone 12 Pro Max
The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are both larger than their predecessors: the former increases from a 5.8-inch screen to 6.1-inches, while the latter expands from 6.5-inches to a 6.7-inch screen. Those are minor changes, although the former is the same size as the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 - and both are much larger than the tiny 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini.
The Pro models have a triple rear camera array that is largely similar to the setup on the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, although they get some granular improvements - for example, the telephoto lens has been improved from 3x to 4x optical zoom (skip to camera section for details).
Apple has also brought an old favorite Mac feature to the latest iPhones: MagSafe is a new system that lets you clip magnetic accessories, such as cases and wireless chargers, to the back of your phone.
Apple has enhanced the displays on the phones with Super Retina XDR, the latest display technology, for the best color accuracy in an iPhone to date. In fact, the 'Ceramic Shield' front on top of the screen has 'nano-ceramic crystals', which, Apple says, provide 4x better drop protection. (Of course with a screen protector you can be assured that your iPhone screen will not break;))
Both the iPhone 12 Pro and the Pro Max can record HDR video and Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps. Dolby Vision video is processed live and supported during editing, Apple says, whether you're editing casually in the Photos or iMovie apps or in Final Cut Pro X later in 2020. Users can share videos up to 4K Dolby Vision with other devices via AirPlay as well.
